Discernment Therapy

For those seeking clarity about whether to stay or go

How do you move forward in your relationship if you or your partner aren’t sure of what you want?

Are either of you contemplating divorce or separation? Are you unsure if you’re prepared to do the work necessary to make the relationship work- or what it might look like if you do (or you don’t) stay together?

Discernment therapy is a limited, solution-focused approach that allows each partner to identify their commitment to the relationship and determine their motivation to work on current problems that make the future uncertain.

Discernment Therapy provides a way for each partner to decide if the relationship issues they’re experiencing can be fixed, and–most importantly-if they are willing to do the work needed to figure out the causes of their current distress and what next steps to take.

I can help you to:

What's covered

We work individually and together in each session to determine the best way forward. Most Discernment Therapy is completed in 4-6 sessions.

Topics addressed in Discernment Therapy include:

  • Each partner’s role in their positive and negative patterns
  • What happened to create the impasse or rupture the couple is dealing with now
  • What has been done to repair the conflict or rupture
  • Internal and external factors that impact the relationship: affairs, addiction, withdrawal,
    etc.
  • Impact the eventual decision will have on each, others important to them
  • Commitment to the relationship
  • Motivation to maintain the relationship

What to Expect

The majority of couples who participate in Discernment Therapy choose to stay together and to work in a highly focused way on replacing the identified causes and issues that emerged during the discernment process. Most often, couples start the agenda for change with a Couples Intensive targeted to address the identified needs, strengths, and goals that emerged as part of the Discernment process.

Ultimately, this is about deciding whether or not you’ll stay together, and the decision will ultimately be between you and your partner. But I will be there to help you work through that together in the least painful way possible.
